Biomolecular NMR Specialist
Exciting Opportunity: Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopist
Are you a scientist who genuinely enjoys working hands‑on with proteins and NMR? This organisation is looking for a Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopist to strengthen their Molecular Sciences capability, supporting early‑stage drug discovery through high‑quality protein NMR data and assay development.
Job Title: Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopist
Vacancy Type: Fixed‑Term Contract (3 Years)
Location: Cambridge
Salary: DOE
The Role of the Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopist
In this role, you will be embedded within a specialist NMR group, supporting fragment‑based drug discovery programmes across oncology and CNS targets. The position is strongly focused on protein NMR, from protein production through to screening, assay development, and data interpretation.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Designing, setting up, and running protein‑observed and ligand‑observed NMR experiments
- Supporting NMR‑based fragment screening campaigns and characterising protein-ligand interactions
- Expressing and purifying isotopically labelled proteins for NMR studies
- Generating robust, high‑quality data on binding affinity, kinetics, and mechanism
- Analysing and clearly communicating results to multidisciplinary project teams
You will work with a modern in‑house NMR suite, supporting high‑impact discovery projects while collaborating closely with chemists, biophysicists, and project scientists.
The Ideal Candidate for the Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopist Role
This role is best suited to someone with deep, hands‑on protein NMR experience. To succeed, you will bring:
- A PhD in a relevant scientific discipline, or at least 4 years of industrial experience working with biomolecular NMR
- Strong, practical experience in protein‑based NMR spectroscopy
- Hands‑on expertise in protein expression and purification, including isotope labelling
- Experience setting up, running, and analysing NMR experiments on Bruker systems
- A solid understanding of NMR theory as applied to biological macromolecules
- The ability to work independently while contributing effectively within project teams
Desirable (But Not Essential) Experience
- Understanding of how SPR, NMR, and biophysical techniques are applied in drug discovery
- Experience with ligand‑observed NMR methods or reporter assays
- Exposure to additional biophysical tools such as SPR, ITC, thermal shift, or MS
- Familiarity with fragment‑based or structure‑based drug discovery
Candidates without direct drug discovery biophysics experience will still be considered, provided they have strong protein NMR fundamentals.
Why This Role?
This is an excellent opportunity for a protein‑focused NMR scientist who wants to work in a highly technical, science‑led environment with access to modern instrumentation, challenging biological targets, and collaborative project teams. The role offers real technical ownership and the chance to develop and apply NMR methods that directly influence drug discovery decisions.
