Job title: Patent Attorney Trainee Opportunity
Location: Bracknell, Berkshire
SRG is working with a company made up of Crop Protection and Seeds business units with more than 30, 000 employees in 90 countries. Our client is looking to recruit a trainee patent attorney at research centre near Bracknell, Berkshire.
About the job:
The company takes a holistic approach to Intellectual Property and that will be a theme throughout your training and beyond. Initially, the work is likely to relate to research projects in chemistry and formulation where you will get to grips with the basic tenets of patentability and freedom-to-operate. These projects may be based locally or may be centred at other research sites for example, in Switzerland, the United States or China. As your training continues and experience grows you will be introduced to less tangible aspects of intellectual property as well as more contentious issues.
This is a rare opportunity to enter the patent attorney profession and train in a leading global research-based company. In due course, you would be expected to qualify as both a UK Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney. The qualification process includes some very challenging professional examinations and the transition to the patent's profession is not to be undertaken lightly. The preparation for the examinations requires the investment of a significant amount of personal time in addition to learning through experience at work. There are currently six patent attorneys working for Crop Protection at their Berkshire Research Facility (and over 40 patent professionals worldwide), four of whom qualified as attorneys while working there, and so they have significant experience of providing the right training and support. The company will provide significant on-the-job training as well as support via external training courses and in taking the examinations themselves.
* A good first degree in chemistry or biochemistry/ or a further degree (master's / PhD) in the organic chemistry field.
* Synthetic organic chemistry experience.
* Organic chemistry research experience in a commercial organization.
Looking to the future, the company is looking for much more than technical ability or an interest in technology. You will have, or quickly develop, a sense of the commercial value of the work that are undertaking and will be able to prioritise your efforts so as to maximize your value to the company. In time, itis expected that any trainee will develop into a well-rounded business partner; an experts in the patents field yet able to advise or give input on a wide range of issues. Openness and excellent communication skills, alongside an ability to strategically influence relevant stakeholders will be vital to success in our global matrix organization. A proactive, assertive but collegiate outlook is essential, along with the ability to develop and nurture relationships with colleagues within the R&D community, and the wider legal function, as well as across diverse commercial and business units.
The position is for an initial probationary period on a fixed contract basis. This probationary period could be up to four years subject to regular performance reviews.
