Process Engineer
Process Engineer
Salary: £28,945 - £44,800 per annum (dependent on experience)
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Location: Sedgefield
About the Role
CPI is looking for a Process Engineer to join their engineering team, supporting the development and scale-up of innovative technologies across a range of sectors.
This role would suit someone with a strong Chemical Engineering background who enjoys applying engineering fundamentals to new and varied challenges. Unlike traditional manufacturing or consultancy environments where processes may already be established, this role focuses on developing and evaluating novel technologies, often at early stages of development. No two projects are the same, and you'll work closely with scientists, engineers and operations teams to solve complex technical problems and help move technologies towards commercialisation.
We're particularly interested in candidates with a solid theoretical understanding of Chemical Engineering principles, combined with practical experience in process development, scale-up or R&D environments.
What You'll Be Doing
- Supporting the development of laboratory, pilot-scale and demonstration-scale processes across a variety of projects.
- Producing engineering calculations, process flow diagrams (PFDs), mass and energy balances and process designs.
- Planning, supporting and analysing pilot plant and experimental activities.
- Collaborating with scientists, engineers and operations teams to develop innovative technical solutions.
- Supporting process development, optimisation and technology scale-up activities.
- Conducting techno-economic analysis to evaluate process viability and performance.
- Contributing to process safety reviews, risk assessments and hazard studies.
- Preparing technical reports, recommendations and project deliverables for internal and external stakeholders.
- Managing smaller projects or work packages and ensuring delivery to agreed timescales and quality standards.
About You
We're looking for a versatile engineer who is technically strong, curious and comfortable working in a research-led environment.
You will have:
- A degree in Chemical Engineering.
- Experience applying core Chemical Engineering principles in industry, research or pilot-scale environments.
- Strong understanding of:
- Mass and energy balances
- Process design
- Process calculations
- Engineering problem-solving
- Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong communication and technical reporting skills.
- The ability to adapt quickly and work across a variety of technologies and industries.
- A proactive and hands-on approach to solving engineering challenges.
Particularly Relevant Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Process scale-up
- Pilot plant operations
- Research & Development (R&D)
- Techno-economic analysis (TEA)
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
- Process simulation
- Aspen Plus
- Aspen HYSYS
- Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
- Process safety and hazard studies
- Sustainable technologies
- Biotechnology, chemicals, materials or advanced manufacturing sectors
Why Join CPI?
This is an opportunity to work on technologies that are genuinely new, supporting projects from concept through to pilot-scale demonstration. You'll collaborate with a wide range of scientists, engineers and technology specialists, applying your Chemical Engineering knowledge to solve challenges across multiple sectors.
The role would particularly suit someone who enjoys variety, wants exposure to cutting-edge technologies and is comfortable operating in an environment where innovation, experimentation and continuous learning are part of everyday work.
