Scientist

Loughborough

Salary: £29,500 per annum

Initial 12-month temporary contract

36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday, based fully on site

Do you have a degree in chemistry, physics or engineering, and want a role that's genuinely hands-on rather than 100% stuck behind a desk? Our client, a specialist in construction products and testing, is looking for a Scientist to join their fire test laboratory team initially on a temporary basis.

This is a UKAS accredited facility carrying out a range of fire testing services that help keep buildings and the people in them safe. No two days look the same: one minute you could be setting up a test rig, the next analysing results and writing up reports, or speaking directly with a customer about how their test is progressing. It's practical, physical work, so you'll need to be just as comfortable using lifting equipment, a broom and shovel as you are in front of a laptop or in front of a customer. Teamwork is a big part of how this lab operates, so you'll be working closely with colleagues day to day.

What you'll be doing

  • Carrying out fire testing activities from start to finish, including setting up rigs and equipment ahead of a test
  • Analysing test data and writing up clear, accurate reports that customers and colleagues can rely on
  • Liaising directly with customers, keeping them updated on test progress, timelines and results, and answering their queries along the way
  • Acting as a point of contact for customers on site during testing, making sure their experience is professional and well managed
  • Taking a proactive, safety-first approach and speaking up if you spot a risk
  • Getting stuck into hands-on testing tasks, including clean-up and general upkeep, to keep the facility running smoothly

What you'll need

  • A degree in chemistry, physics or engineering OR equivalent experience in an industrial or material testing environment
  • A genuinely proactive attitude to health and safety
  • Willing and able to take on physical and manual work, as well as customer interaction

Why apply

You'll be joining a lab that takes real pride in the standard of its testing, with a team that backs each other up and gets involved. If you like a mix of technical and physical work and want to build genuine experience in a hands-on industrial environment, this is a good place to do it.
