Content Officer (12-Month Fixed-Term Contract - Maternity Cover)

Hybrid Working | North East (primarily Sedgefield) | £36,044 - £46,044

About the Role

CPI is seeking a talented Content Officer to join our Communications, Content & Channels team on a 12-month maternity cover contract.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced writer, editor, and communicator who can take complex scientific, technical, and innovation-focused topics and transform them into clear, engaging content for a range of audiences. The successful candidate will act as a key editorial voice within the team, helping to shape content quality, tone of voice, and storytelling across multiple channels.

We're looking for someone who is comfortable operating independently, leading conversations with stakeholders, challenging contributors where necessary, and ensuring all content meets the highest editorial standards. Above all else, we're looking for somebody who can write exceptionally well.

What You'll Be Responsible For:

Content Creation & Editorial Leadership

  • Write, edit, and publish compelling content across CPI's website, social media channels, campaigns, and communications materials.
  • Act as a guardian of CPI's tone of voice, editorial standards, and content quality.
  • Review, edit, and approve content produced by colleagues and contributors.
  • Develop engaging stories that showcase CPI's expertise, innovation, and impact.

Science & Technical Communication

  • Interview scientists, engineers, technical specialists, and business leaders to gather information and develop engaging content.
  • Translate complex scientific, technical, manufacturing, and innovation-related topics into clear and accessible language.
  • Create content that resonates with both technical and non-technical audiences, including industry, government, partners, and wider stakeholder groups.

Media Relations & Communications

  • Write press releases, editorial articles, case studies, website copy, blogs, and campaign content.
  • Support media relations activities and engage with journalists and external media contacts.
  • Contribute to communications campaigns designed to raise awareness of CPI's capabilities and impact.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead content-focused discussions with stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Guide subject matter experts and contributors to develop stronger, more audience-focused content.
  • Build effective relationships across teams to ensure content is accurate, timely, and impactful.

Digital Content & Performance

  • Support the management and maintenance of website and digital content.
  • Monitor content effectiveness and channel performance.
  • Contribute ideas for continuous improvement and audience engagement.

About You

You are an experienced content professional who is equally comfortable writing from scratch, editing the work of others, and confidently engaging stakeholders to improve communications outcomes.

You'll bring:

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Experience creating content across websites, publications, digital channels, and communications campaigns.
  • Proven ability to simplify complex information and develop compelling stories.
  • Confidence managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to work independently and take ownership of content delivery.

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Experience in journalism, publishing, media, communications, marketing, or science communication.
  • Experience working with technical experts or scientific organisations.
  • Media relations experience and confidence engaging with journalists.
  • Understanding of SEO and digital content best practice.
  • Experience within science, technology, engineering, manufacturing, research, or innovation environments.

We'd particularly like to hear from candidates who have experience in:

  • Journalism or editorial roles
  • Science communication
  • Technical or B2B content marketing
  • Publishing or media organisations
  • Agency environments where content creation is central to the role

Why Join CPI?

  • Join a highly regarded and supportive Communications team.
  • Work across a diverse portfolio of science, innovation, manufacturing, and technology projects.
  • Opportunity to shape how complex innovation stories are communicated externally.
  • High degree of autonomy and ownership.
  • Competitive salary (£36,044 - £46,044).

Location & Working Pattern

  • Hybrid working arrangement.
  • Primarily based at NETPark, Sedgefield.
  • Typically 2 days per week on-site, with flexibility depending on business needs.
  • Occasional travel to other CPI locations may be required.

The Opportunity

This role would suit a confident content professional who enjoys finding stories, building relationships, and creating content that makes complex topics accessible and engaging. Whether your background is journalism, science communication, publishing, content marketing, or editorial work, this is an opportunity to play a key role in communicating some of the UK's most exciting innovation and technology programmes.
