Exciting Opportunity: Metabolism Identification Expert

Are you an experienced metabolite identification/DMPK expert with a passion for uncovering the metabolic fate of drug candidates? This is an excellent opportunity to join a specialist DMPK and drug development team, where you'll take a leading role in the design, execution, and interpretation of biotransformation studies that directly influence drug discovery and development programmes.

Job Title: Metabolism Identification Expert
Vacancy Type: Permanent
Location: Sandwich (Laboratory-Based)
Salary: DOE

About the Organisation

This organisation provides specialist scientific expertise to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, supporting drug discovery and development programmes from early candidate selection through to clinical development.

The DMPK and biotransformation teams play a critical role in helping clients understand the metabolic fate of drug candidates, using advanced analytical technologies and scientific expertise to guide decision-making throughout the development process. The environment combines scientific excellence with a collaborative culture, offering opportunities to influence project strategy and mentor the next generation of scientists.

The Role of the Metabolism Identification Expert

As a subject matter expert in metabolite identification and biotransformation, you will lead the design, execution, and interpretation of studies that support both discovery and development programmes. You will provide scientific guidance across multiple projects while helping to develop the technical capabilities of more junior team members.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading metabolite identification and characterisation studies across all stages of drug discovery and development
  • Designing and refining biotransformation strategies to answer key project questions
  • Applying advanced analytical techniques including HPLC, high-resolution mass spectrometry, UV spectroscopy, radiochemical detection, and in vitro metabolism systems
  • Investigating metabolic pathways and assessing their impact on drug disposition and candidate progression
  • Troubleshooting complex analytical challenges and developing innovative solutions
  • Interpreting complex datasets and delivering clear scientific recommendations to project teams and clients
  • Managing multiple studies simultaneously while maintaining high scientific and regulatory standards
  • Authoring technical reports and communicating findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Mentoring, coaching, and supporting junior scientists in technical development and scientific best practice
  • Contributing to study strategy, customer interactions, and scientific decision-making across programmes

The Ideal Candidate for the Metabolism Identification Expert Role

To thrive in this role, you will need:

  • A BSc, MSc, or PhD in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience within DMPK, metabolism, or biotransformation laboratories
  • Extensive recent experience in metabolite identification and metabolite characterisation
  • Strong understanding of metabolic clearance pathways and their relevance to drug development
  • Recent hands-on expertise using high-resolution mass spectrometry and associated data analysis software
  • Experience applying a range of analytical techniques to metabolism studies
  • Excellent data interpretation and scientific writing skills
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities and a solution-focused approach
  • The ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities

Desirable Experience

The following would be advantageous:

  • Experience leading studies or acting as a scientific lead on customer projects
  • Previous mentoring, supervision, or line management of junior scientists
  • Broader DMPK expertise, including phenotyping and quantitative bioanalysis
  • Experience within pharmaceutical or CRO environments
  • Knowledge of regulated drug development activities

Why This Role?

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced metabolism scientist looking to take on greater scientific responsibility while helping shape and develop a growing team. You'll combine hands-on technical expertise with project leadership, mentorship, and strategic input, making a direct contribution to the progression of future medicines.
