Title: Site Chemist / Transfer Station Chemist (Open to All Experience Levels)
Location: Middlesbrough
Salary: £32,000-£33,000 (Site Chemist) / Up to £36,000 (Managing Chemist)
Term: Permanent
Working Hours:
Monday to Friday 37.5 hours a week, flexible start and finish times

SRG are partnering with a leading waste management and recycling organisation with a long and successful history of supporting the UK chemical industry. Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint a Site Chemist OR, for candidates with significant experience and leadership capability, a Managing Chemist.
This is a hands‑on role within the hazardous waste sector, overseeing the acceptance, testing, processing and safe handling of hazardous and non‑hazardous waste. The team are open to candidates at different stages in their careers - from those with around a year's experience in waste transfer operations, to more senior chemists seeking a step into a Managing Chemist position.
Role/Description
Core Responsibilities (all levels):
- Receiving and checking chemical waste on site, ensuring compliance with acceptance criteria and environmental legislation
- Completing and verifying all associated paperwork for incoming waste
- Controlling waste streams across the plant to avoid delays or backlogs
- Immediate testing of incoming waste using techniques such as pH, flash point, visual checks, odour, viscosity and test strips
- Supporting safe, compliant and efficient processing, storage and transfer of waste
- Bulking and re‑packing waste to maximise site efficiency and profitability
Additional Responsibilities (Managing Chemist level):
- Supervising, planning and prioritising day‑to‑day activities of Transfer Station Operatives
- Providing leadership to site chemists and operatives, promoting a collaborative and high‑performance environment
- Ensuring site operations meet regulatory standards and internal quality expectations
- Acting as a technical escalation point within the team
Requirements
Essential (all levels):
- Minimum HND in Chemistry or similar discipline with significant chemistry content
- Recent experience working with hazardous waste (minimum 1+ year for Site Chemist level, 4+ years for the managing chemist role)
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience (required for Managing Chemist consideration)
- Full right to work in the UK (no sponsorship available)
