Laboratories and Cleanroom Technician
Pay rate: £19-21 p/h
Hours: 36.5 hours per week
Location: London
Contract: 3 Months / Onsite
Main Purpose of the Job
To support the Biomaterials Processing Laboratory (BPL) and associated cleanroom facilities. The technician will maintain equipment, support research, and ensure safe lab operations. Training and development opportunities will be provided.
Duties and Responsibilities
General Maintenance
- Maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Prepare for servicing visits
- Stock consumables and manage waste collections
- Conduct daily inspections and general tidying
- Ensure risk assessments are current
- Verify training documentation for cleanroom users
- Provide inductions and equipment training
- Control chemical usage and disposal per departmental policy
Equipment Maintenance & Supervision
- Mentor new equipment users
- Provide sample preparation for training
- Perform routine machine testing and maintenance
- Conduct Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)
Technical Duties
- Request or fabricate items via workshop
- Maintain and operate cleanroom and lab equipment
- Develop competence in: Gyratory spinning rigs, Microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, High-speed cameras, SEM
Research Support
- Assist in experiments such as EHD spraying for nanoparticle creation
- Hydroxyapatite deposition on titanium alloys
- SEM sample analysis
- Cell culture techniques
- Participate in research group activities and publications
- Prepare progress reports and contribute to departmental goals
General Duties
- Implement standard operating procedures and promote safe lab practices
- Attend research meetings
- Act as First Aider / Fire Marshal as needed
Person Specification
Qualifications, Experience & Knowledge
- Minimum 5 GCSEs (Grade C or above) including Maths and English, or equivalent experience (Essential)
- Awareness of lab Health & Safety requirements (Essential)
- Experience in university/educational settings (Desirable)
