STEM Professions: Jobs in Maintenance Engineering

Maintenance engineers are at the forefront of engineering -- ensuring the continuous and smooth running of equipment and machinery. Explore what it means to work in this expanding field.

What is maintenance engineering?

Maintenance Engineering is the discipline and profession of applying engineering concepts for the optimisation of equipment, procedures, and departmental budgets to achieve better maintainability, reliability, and availability of equipment. SRG focuses on the areas of food science, pharma manufacturing, medical devices, and chemical production.

What are the key trends in maintenance engineering?

According to Engineering UK’s report, engineering generated 23% of the UK’s total turnover. Some emerging technological advances have changed the shape of the economy towards an hourglass shape, resulting in the expansion of knowledge-intensive services.

The digital disruption of the product engineering and manufacturing process will have the biggest impact on the sector. Most engineers will see both concepts of digital twin and digital thread in action daily as companies look for ways to improve efficiency and serviceability. Having a complete digital record of a product throughout its lifecycle will help with product design.

Skill sets of maintenance engineers will, as a consequence, evolve to adapt to this digitalisation trend. Augmented reality (AR) now allows engineers to pull products from the screen into the real world, to scale, and to form a relationship with their intended environment. The technology may also be used for manufacturing work instructions, service procedures, product design and development, and sales and marketing.
