Digital Plant Engineer (2 Positions)

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana (hybrid, 1 week per month on-site, expenses paid)
Start date: ASAP
Duration: 12 months with extension (3-year project)
Engagement type: W2, 1099 or C2C
Industry: Pharmaceutical (API / bulk manufacturing)

About the Role

We're looking for two Digital Plant Engineers to join a large-scale pharmaceutical automation program. You'll be embedded in the Project Automation Team, making sure digital solutions fit the manufacturing process, facility design and regulatory requirements.

You'll be the bridge between operations, process engineering, automation and IT, turning real plant needs into clear digital requirements. The role spans process control, automation-MES integration, historian delivery, PAT platform oversight, digital use case scoping and data integrity compliance. You'll work with the Automation Project Team, the Program Technical Office (PTO), Process Engineering, Process Technical Transfer and end users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Connect the Business, Technology and Data architectures for the facility
  • Represent the automation function in Digital Plant discussions and forums
  • Contribute to the Digital Strategy and Digital Plant use cases for the project
  • Contribute to the project's Data Architecture
  • Lead data flow mapping activities
  • Contribute to delivery of site-level data infrastructure (e.g. AVEVA PI, LogMate)
  • Help shape the overall automation philosophy for the program
  • Provide technical consulting and support as part of the Project Automation Team
  • Interface with other disciplines and stakeholders to ensure deliverables meet business needs
  • Report progress, issues and needs to the Automation Project Manager
  • Maintain compliance with training requirements

About You

Essential

  • BS in Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • 7+ years in API/bulk pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Strong automation and OT operations background (DCS engineering, batch manufacturing). This is an automation role, not a validation role.
  • Hands-on DeltaV Batch DCS experience (the core of the role)
  • Design experience on greenfield or brownfield builds
  • Experience delivering large automation projects in pharma
  • Data integration experience: connecting standalone automation systems to L3/L2 systems so the right data reaches the batch record
  • Ability to translate process and operational needs into digital requirements
  • A mixed background across operations, process/automation and digital/IT, with a record of bridging silos between those teams
  • Strong knowledge of GMP, regulatory requirements and computer system validation principles
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Exceptional teamwork skills

Desirable

  • MES experience (flagged as important by the client, so you may want to move it to Essential)
  • AVEVA PI experience

How to Apply

[Application instructions / contact details]

Internal: Submission Checklist (don't publish)

The client wants these points highlighted in each submittal:

  1. DeltaV is the main focus
  2. Automation background, not validation
  3. Design experience (greenfield/brownfield). Note where they did it.
  4. MES experience
  5. Process automation experience
  6. OT operations background
  7. Data integration of standalone automation systems with L3/L2 systems for batch records

Process: Submit directly to the hiring manager, who wants to interview ASAP. Availability is Thursday and Friday mornings (Thursday before 11 AM), and mornings next week. The manager is in Ireland, so interviews are likely before 1 PM daily.

Notes

  • Rate: $190/hr is your bill rate, so I left it out. Candidates should see a pay rate or range, which will be lower once margin is taken out.
  • MES: The updated notes list MES as a highlight, but the original lists it as "preferable." I kept it as Desirable, but you could upgrade it if the client treats it as a must-have.
  • LogMate: Please confirm the spelling.
