Position Summary

The Senior Structural Engineer will serve as an experienced owner-side technical resource responsible for reviewing, evaluating, and supporting complex structural engineering work for heavy industrial and LNG-related facilities. This role will focus on structural design review, LNG tank and containment systems, seismic and wind engineering, deep foundations, heavy equipment foundations, structural steel, modularization, construction engineering, and multidisciplinary coordination. The ideal candidate will have strong technical judgment, heavy industrial experience, and the ability to review vendor calculations, IFC drawings, specifications, QA/QC documentation, and proposed corrective actions for non-conformance items.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review structural engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and vendor deliverables for heavy industrial and LNG-related projects.
  • Evaluate design assumptions, identify missing load cases, provide actionable comments, and assess proposed corrective measures for non-conformance items.
  • Support review of full containment LNG tank systems, including secondary concrete containment, cryogenic concrete behavior, prestressed concrete tanks, thermal gradient effects, pile and pile cap foundations, ring wall foundations, settlement criteria, leak containment, tank uplift, and overturning.
  • Review seismic engineering considerations, including site-specific response spectra, SSE/OBE/ALE earthquake definitions, soil-structure interaction, dynamic foundation analysis, equipment anchorage, response spectrum analysis, time-history analysis, LNG tank seismic loads, and pipe rack seismic performance.
  • Evaluate wind engineering requirements, including ASCE wind methodologies, hurricane design, open-terrain exposure effects, pipe rack wind loading, large modular building design, cladding pressures, fatigue from cyclic wind loading, and construction-stage wind vulnerability.
  • Review and interpret geotechnical recommendations related to borehole logs, CPT data, soil improvement designs, vibro-compaction, stone columns, deep soil mixing, driven piles, drilled shafts, settlement predictions, and soil liquefaction.
  • Support review of heavy foundation designs, including dynamic equipment foundations, cryogenic heat exchanger foundations, pipe bridge foundations, modularized equipment foundations, at-grade slabs, frost walls, and sound/vapor barrier wall foundations.
  • Review structural steel designs for pipe racks, equipment support structures, access platforms, cable tray supports, blast-resistant structures, and material impacts related to fire or cryogenic exposure.
  • Evaluate construction engineering plans and temporary conditions, including temporary bracing, module shipping loads, module lifting loads and plans, heavy haul routes, jack-and-skid operations, and temporary foundations.
  • Coordinate structural scope and technical interfaces with process, mechanical, piping, electrical, controls, fire protection, and geotechnical disciplines.
  • Support modularization-related reviews, including fabrication-yard design, transportation analysis, lift engineering, module interface structures, and modular building systems.
  • Consider cost and constructability impacts related to concrete quantities, structural steel quantities, contractor productivity, fabrication constraints, schedule impacts, and long-lead materials.
  • Ensure structural reviews align with applicable LNG, structural, seismic, wind, concrete, steel, tank, welding, building code, and regulatory standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer license in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 10+ years of heavy industrial experience.
  • Strong understanding of seismic design requirements, including soil-structure interaction, equipment anchorage, dynamic foundation analysis, response spectrum analysis, time-history analysis, LNG tank seismic loads, and pipe rack seismic performance.
  • Knowledge of wind design requirements, including hurricane design, pipe rack wind loading, cladding pressures, cyclic wind fatigue, and construction-stage wind vulnerability.
  • Ability to review geotechnical recommendations and understand soil improvement, deep foundation systems, settlement predictions, and soil liquefaction considerations.
  • Experience with heavy foundation design, dynamic loads, equipment anchorage systems, and grouting systems.
  • Experience reviewing structural steel designs for pipe racks, equipment supports, access platforms, cable tray supports, blast-resistant structures, and thermal exposure impacts.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis software such as RISA, STAAD, SAP2000, ETABS, SACS, and/or GT STRUDL.
  • Experience reviewing construction QA/QC documentation and evaluating corrective measures for non-conformance items.

Highly Preferred

  • Experience reviewing full containment LNG tank structural considerations, including concrete containment systems, cryogenic behavior, prestressed concrete, foundations, settlement, leak containment, uplift, and overturning.
  • Strong knowledge of LNG codes and regulatory standards, including 49 CFR Part 193, ACI, AISC, API, ASCE, ASTM, AWS, CRSI, FERC LNG seismic guidance, IBC, and NFPA 59A.
