Overview
Responsible for architecting, designing, and validating electrical control systems for automated machinery and industrial processes - panel layouts, power distribution, and integration of PLCs, safety systems, and industrial communication networks.
Must-Haves

  • Strong EPLAN Electric P8 experience preferred (AutoCAD Electrical experience is highly desired and may offset some EPLAN gap)
  • Experience creating and maintaining electrical control panel designs
  • Knowledge of heat calculations, electrical safety requirements, and hardware design principles
  • Deep working knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 79, UL 508A, and/or IEC 60204 (European standards) - most projects align with European design standards
  • Mastery of motor control circuits (DOL starters, soft starters, VFD configurations)
  • Ability to calculate SCCR and voltage drop

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with block building/design in EPLAN (significant advantage)
  • Familiarity with GM GCCH and Ford GVOSS standards
  • Automotive industry background (not required - open to candidates from non-automotive industries with strong hardware design skills)

Key Responsibilities

  • Create electrical schematics and physical layout blueprints for industrial control panels/enclosures
  • Design low-to-medium voltage power distribution systems (breakers, fuses, transformers, contactors)
  • Select/integrate PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo systems, and industrial sensors
  • Architect failsafe safety circuits (safety relays, light curtains, E-stops, interlocks)
  • Design industrial network topologies (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, EtherCAT)
  • Specify cable types, conduit sizing, and terminal block arrangements for field wiring
  • Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT); occasional onsite commissioning/troubleshooting support
  • Collaborate with Controls/PLC Programmers, Mechanical Engineers, and electrical technicians
  • Communicate with component suppliers and panel fabrication shops

Education & Experience
Candidates should meet one of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree (Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field) plus internship experience in hardware design, OR
  • Some college (degree not required) plus 3-5 years of relevant hardware design/controls engineering experience
  • No degree + 7-10 years' experience.
