SRG is delighted to be supporting our Cambridge UK based start-up biotech client with their search for a Senior Director/Director for Discovery Biology. With funding secured, they are working to develop a highly innovative synthetic biology platform, to create new and ground breaking cell therapeutics. Applying CRISPR technology to engineer iPSCs, these are further functionalised into cell therapies with the aim of creating cell products with the ability to process external cues via engineered receptors, which then release a variety of cargos upon activation. Such methodology can be used to create innovative treatment solutions for autoimmune and cancer disease models.
As Director, you will take a leading role in managing the Discovery Biology team, where you will identify and develop the biology into in vitro assays and in vivo validations packages, to support the developing platform and research projects. As part of the Senior Leadership team, you will play a pivotal role in the company’s strategic planning.
In addition to your technical expertise and leadership skills, you will also have proven commercial skills to drive the business plans forward, while building an effective network of contacts.
Key responsibilities:
• Manage, motivate and lead the Discovery Biology team, supporting the continued investigations into the cellular/mechanistic biology of the chassis and therapeutic assets
• Development and validation of bioassays, cell assays and in vivo model
• Planning and delivering robust and reproducible pharmacology packages of therapeutic assets to support the IND filing of therapeutic assets
• Work closely with the Analytical Development team to ensure an effective technology transfer of assays to GMP Manufacture
• Plan and manage ongoing Discovery projects, creating clear project milestones
• Work effectively with the Discovery team to develop their technical skills (manipulating cell lines & primary cells)
• Manage and process discovery project data

Ideal candidates will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Cell Biology or a related field, with extensive experience of working in Biotech or Pharma research. Previous academic or industrial research experience within stem cell biology and cell therapy is also essential. Candidates must have proven experience of leading and motivating research teams to overcome technical challenges to create innovative solutions. Successful applicants must demonstrate a proven ability to develop and deliver robust business strategies to achieve company milestones. The ability to develop effective relationships and influence key industry contacts is also critical. Previous experience of operating as a key subject matter expert to drive technical objectives is key.

Candidates must have a flexible approach and be comfortable working within an ever-changing and fast paced environment. Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop effective internal and external relationships is also critical. As a technical expert, you will have a proven ability to build a strong technical network across the industry offering your subject matter expertise and creating partnerships.
