The Vacancy

We are looking for a high calibre individual who is passionate about helping to develop a sustainable Cell and Gene Therapy Sector in the UK and who wants to play a pivotal role in delivering an innovative skills programme within the UK.

The Laboratory Technician (Skills Team) is an integral member of the Skills Team which delivers Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult skills and training programmes focussed primarily on the Stevenage Cluster. This new initiative will positively impact on Cell and Gene Therapy companies within the Stevenage Cluster and also deliver strategically as the cluster continues to grow.

The role will support the Skills Team in delivering training within the state-of-the-art Skills and Training Laboratories to attract new talent from across sectors. Included within this, is the development of professional skills to retain existing people within the sector through technical and leadership programmes, the improvement of industrial readiness in graduate and undergraduate programmes and to build on the Advanced Therapies Apprenticeship Community (ATAC).

Key Accountabilities:

Reporting to the Skills Programme Lead, the Laboratory Technician (Skills Team) will substantially impact the future success of the Skills and Training Laboratories. This will be achieved by:

  • Support the establishment of operational Skills and Training Laboratories. Activities will include supporting the generation of documentation for operational readiness, possible writing/editing of SOPs, on-site support of equipment delivery, installation and commissioning
  • Responsibility for day-to-day maintenance of the Skills and Training Laboratories by demonstrating excellent householding and laboratory stewardship. Ensuring their smooth operation by performing activities such as but not limited to attending meetings between CGTC and landlord, to order and receipt of deliveries, waste management, taking stock of consumables, responding to on-call duties and tracking equipment service agreements
  • Support laboratory operations by operating under aseptic technique, ensuring adequate reagent supply and that equipment is safe, calibrated and ready to use.
  • Perform laboratory-based activities for training delivery of laboratory and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) processes. As such awareness and understanding of operating within a GMP environment would be advantageous.
  • Laboratory-based activities can include but are not limited to media preparation, culture of various cell types, training on routine assays such as flow cytometry, RT-qPCR, Western Blot, ELISA, and upstream / downstream (USP / DSP) bioprocessing of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs).
  • Ability to follow procedures in order to make the Skills and Training laboratories user-ready including re-arranging the laboratory and equipment as per training requirement
  • Adhere to SOPs to prepare trainee arrivals and departures, as well pristine condition of the premise during training
  • Assist in delivery of basic laboratory and GMP skills training provision including but not limited to gowning, cleaning and equipment monitoring


  • Technical knowledge either in biologics or cell biology is required. More specifically, a background in immunology, virology or other related life science discipline is preferrable.
  • Relevant experience working within a research or industry-based manufacturing environment either with biologics or CGT.
  • Cell culture experience is critical.
  • Experience in laboratory maintenance and management is beneficial
  • Experience of flow cytometry sample acquisition, RNA/DNA isolation, RT-qPCR and ELISA would be advantageous
  • Experience of cell culture using human and/or mammalian cell lines with STRs in batch and perfusion mode would be advantageous
  • Experience in training or upskilling individuals for work in laboratories would be advantageous
  • Familiarity with equipment used in ATMP manufacture is desirable.
  • Background knowledge of cell and gene therapy industry is beneficial.

Knowledge / Skills / Competencies:

    • Good written communication skills including report writing, data presentation and protocol writing.
    • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.
    • Good IT skills including experience of data analysis
    • Experience of laboratory equipment calibration and maintenance.

Education / Qualifications

    • BSc within Life Sciences or Bio-Engineering subject is preferred. Alternative relevant qualification (ie. Level 3 / Level 5 apprenticeship) or industry experience will also be considered
