We are looking to hire an early career scientist with experience in fermentation process development.

Location: North East of England

Salary: £25,000 - 30,000 per annum

SRG are currently working with a very well-established organisation which is responsible for technical innovations across the UK in different scientific sectors. In response to an increasing breadth of specialist projects in the area, they are looking to hire an early career scientist with experience in fermentation process development. The successful candidate will have a relevant degree in a discipline such as Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry or Biological Sciences, as well as hands on experience working with bioreactors and microbial fermentation experiments. This organisation is a leader in scientific innovation, mainly looking at providing scientific support around process, development and product improvement working across multiple sites. Founded in 2004, they have been behind some of the UK's biggest scientific innovations.

Your responsibilities;

  • To set-up, operate and monitor microbial fermentation processes under batch, fed-batch and continuous conditions following predefined protocols.
  • To support the routine maintenance of fermenters, identifying and escalating issues which may impact their performance and availability.
  • To support the design of experiment (DOE) to study the effect of multiple variables on fermentation performance and the effects of interactions between variables.
  • To undertake product harvesting and primary cell recovery by centrifugation and tangential flow filtration.


  • A degree in a Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry or Biological Sciences. A Higher degree is highly desirable.
  • Experience of upstream process development and bioreactor operation (eg. Sartorius, Infors, Applikon etc).
  • Experience with upstream cell culture process development and an understanding of process optimisation for product yield and impurity profile improvement.
  • (Desired) Experience working in a regulated environment such as Food, Feed, Pharma sectors.
