Quality assurance (QA) is any systematic process of determining whether a product or service meets specified requirements.
It establishes and maintains set requirements for developing or manufacturing reliable products. Now a formalised practice which started in the manufacturing industry, it has spread to most industries. Quality assurance can take you on a varied and exciting journey throughout your career.
What are the key trends in quality assurance?
Due to the nature of this sector, it is hard to pin down one major area where this profession is most common. The fact that this is a necessary role in many areas of science, clinical and engineering gives those aiming for a career a multitude of varied companies and institutions to choose from.
One area that is being addressed is the change in the skill set required for moving the pharmaceutical industry to a “4.0” maturity level. New kinds of employee profiles and qualifications are needed. The “Workforce of the Future” initiative, introduced by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE), includes a variety of members from top pharmaceutical companies. In the next five to ten years, the industry will need a highly-skilled workforce with competencies that differ from the past.
The initiative plans to work with the industry and academia to develop university curricula. During the initial phase with nine selected universities, they identified a number of potential gaps in university curricula:
- Combination Products and Delivering Systems
- Robotics and Automation
- IT Data Management, including data analysis, modelling, statistics, and data visualization
- Regulatory Sciences, including cGMP and GMP hands-on training
- Project Management, including risk management in manufacturing processes (biotech and small molecules) and related cost analysis
- Process Analytical Technology to achieve real-time release
